* * * * *

Three days later, we were married. And I mean married. I don’t know how the hell it happened, but it did. Maybe it was being in Vegas or drinking too much or the close proximity to cheap wedding chapels, but all I know was that we were at that casino where the pirate ship explodes and he grabbed me, kissed me hard and said, “Let’s get married!”

“What?” I yelled over the crowd.

He stared into my eyes and yelled, “Marry me!”

“What?!”

“Marry me, Tabitha!”

“Are you insane!”

“I am not!” he yelled.

“Shut up!”

“Come on!” he yelled. “I am crazy for you!”

But I already knew that. I knew it since the moment he sat down next to me on the beach. I knew it when he said he’d seen me at the taco truck. I knew he’d been crushing on me for a good while but was just too shy to actually talk to me. I thought it was so sweet. And he was sweet.

After I agreed to go to Vegas with him, we got on the plane and by plane, I meant a private jet that was so cool and nice and expensive looking I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. It was really swanky! My jaw dropped. However, I managed to play it cool and get on. It was so cool and I could see why people pay so much money for those planes. I’d only been on a short flight to Miami from Tennessee once but this was much better. And the flight attendants served cold champagne and appetizers. It was like I’d suddenly found myself in some strange movie where stuff like this actually happens. It was beyond surreal.

And Tom had been a complete gentleman. He got me my own suite—not just room, but suite—on the same floor as his and never made a single pass at me. I did catch him checking me out a few times, but that was all. He also lent me a thousand dollars which I immediate lost on the blackjack tables as I knew nothing about playing blackjack. I almost cried when that happened, blaming him for “making” me play a game which I obviously sucked at. He gave me a hundred more and I took it to a slot machine, deciding to play the whole damned thing there until I ran out. However, this time it was a different story and the machine actually hit and it hit big—for ten-thousand dollars! I was able to pay him back, plus interest, and buy him dinner. It was also a good feeling to know I now had enough for my own apartment and would even be able to pay rent for a few months in advance. I could officially stay in California. Well, at least long enough to have time to figure something out. I was so happy and it was all thanks to Tom, too. He was like my knight in shining armor or something.

We had so much fun. His
